Jones Beach Guide And Information
Many
people don't typically think of New York as a place
for a beach vacation--but that's because they're not
familiar with Jones Beach. Stretching for six
miles along the south shore of Long Island, Jones Beach
actually gets quite crowded in the summer time.
Lockers, boardwalk concessions, miniature golf, and
even a swimming pool make this a pleasant vacation experience
that does not involve a lot of travel. On top
of it all, there's evening entertainment at restaurants
and at various open-air concerts.
Jones Beach is an easily accessible
area you that can reach by car, bike, bus, even boat.
However, most people visit by car, taking the Meadowbrook
State Parkway, or in some cases, the Wantagh State Parkway.
Some others go to Freeport via the LIRR and then take
a bus over to Jones Beach.
Jones Beach is actually considered a
state park. Its clear, warm water has turned it
into a world-famous swimming destination. Along
its 6.5 miles of ocean-walking, Jones Beach offers surf
bathing during most o the day, as well as a half-mile
of bay beach for those interested in stillwater bathing.
Surf fishing is available at the park's
west end. The Theodore Roosevelt Nature Center
also calls Jones Beach State Park home. At the
Nature Center, there are various displays about the
beach seashore. It also offers tours and family-friendly
programs for all ages.
Located at the East Bathhouse is a photo
collection entitled "Castles in the Sand."
This collection portrays the development and history
of Long Island State Park.
For those visiting in May, Jones Beach
plays host for the Bethpage Federal Credit Union's Memorial
Day Air Show.
Need something to eat or drink?
Numerous concession stands dot the boardwalk during
peak season. Some of the larger stands are open
even into the autumn months.
Until 2004, there had been a large cafe
there called The Boardwalk Cafe. It was built
in 1966, and was in business until 2004, when it was
torn down because of erosion. It will be replaced
in the next few years with a much larger facility that
will seat 350 customers.
And for dessert, head to the West Bath
House, where you'll find Friendly's Ice Cream.
Some people will want to get away from
the beach itself for their dining needs. Nearby
are some high-quality eating establishments, including:
• Akari, a Japanese restaurant with fresh sushi
rolls and other favorites like tempura. It's at
2063 Merrick Rd.
• All American Burger has the American favorites
such as hot dots, hamburgers and french fries.
It's located at 4286 Merrick Rd.
• Corbin & Reynolds is a handsome spot in
a handsome wood and brick building. It has a vibrant
bar scene and appealing menu. Especially recommended
are New Zealand lamb and black angus steak. You'll
find it at 20 W. Park Avenue.
• Fresco Creperie is a casual downtown restaurant
that features excellent crepes, salads, sandwiches and
coffee. They're located at 150A East Park Avenue.
Excellent food, great scenery, outstanding
swimming all make Jones Beach an unexpectedly pleasant
beach experience.
